I've had the same sander for at least 10 years and use it primarily for knife sharpening although it's also useful for numerous little sanding tasks. 95% of the time I have the 15-micron belt on the machine and it does a great job for knives.

One thing confuses me, you set your table to 35 degrees, which is going to put a 65 degree bevel on your tool (assuming you are measuring from horizontal). The Lee Valley site and you have mentioned a counter-clockwise rotation on the motor.
